Exploring High-Temperature Glazes in Jingdezhen: 47 Surfaces Through Practice and Experimentation

Today, I’d like to show you a special collection released in 2026 by Chinese Sources Organization.

This series presents a total of 47 high-temperature glaze colors**.
These colors were not created all at once. They are the result of several years of ceramic teaching and experimentation here in Jingdezhen, where we gradually collected and tested many traditional glaze variations.

Normally, glaze testing is done on small ceramic test tiles, where you can only see a flat sample of the color.
This time, we spent a lot of time applying these glazes onto fully finished coffee cups, so viewers can better understand how the colors actually appear on real ceramic forms.

The purpose of this video is to share references and inspiration with friends, artists, and ceramic practitioners who are interested in glaze colors.

All the glazes shown here are high-temperature glazes, fired at temperatures above 1200 degrees Celsius.

Traditionally in Jingdezhen, high-temperature color glazes can be roughly divided into several groups.

The first is red glaze, known for its rich and brilliant appearance.
The second is celadon or green glaze, a very traditional Jingdezhen style, calm and elegant.
The third is yellow glaze, which feels bright and clear.
And the fourth is variegated or patterned glaze, which is the main focus of this collection.

Patterned glazes have been developed in Jingdezhen over hundreds of years. During firing, the glaze naturally flows, gathers, and separates, creating unpredictable spots and patterns. Because of this, every piece becomes unique.

Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, Chinese color glazes have continued to evolve. Historical records mention more than fifty traditional glaze colors, and today, more than one hundred glaze materials are available in Jingdezhen’s ceramic market.

In this project, we selected 47 of them and completed firing on finished ceramic pieces.
It required significant time, experimentation, and investment.

These glaze surfaces represent only a small part of our ongoing exploration here in Jingdezhen.
